This SOP may not cover all possible hazards and risks and should be referred to as a control measure in the risk assessment process.
Additional training may be required for high risk plant. Site and task may change required PPE.

PREVENTION
- Fire hazards must be eliminated by prompt removal of combustible material from the work area
- When heat-producing equipment is used, (e.g. welders, oxy/acetylene, LPG, equipment) ensure all sources of potential fires are eliminated from the immediate area and suitable fire extinguishers are on hand
- Know the location and proper use of fire fighting equipment and ensure all fire extinguishers are recharged after use
- Firefighting equipment is not to be used for any other purpose other than what it is intended for
- Lighting of fires on site is prohibited unless permission has been obtained from site management and relevant statutory authorities
- Arrange for workers to undergo fire prevention courses whenever possible
PLANNING & PREPARATION FOR THE TASK
- Refer to any pre-incident plans, site control and containment plan and directives
- Approach incident using care and caution and ensure a safe distance is maintained
- Ensure services are isolated
- Ensure an appropriately qualified first aider is available
- Notify Emergency services if required
- Ensure evacuation procedures are implemented as directed
- Perform a Risk Assessment DRABC

- Select PPE appropriate to the type of hazard reported, are selected and worn

- Ensure scene is secured and hazard control and decontamination zones are established if required

OPERATING PROCEDURES
- Sound the alarm – shout fire
- Call 000 for help as soon as possible.
- Fight fire only if safe to do so evacuate the area
MONITOR & REVIEW
- If unsafe stop, review get approval
- Supervisor to check all activities
EVACUATION
- When advised – immediately stop what you are doing and quickly leave the building by the nearest safe exit and meet at the designated assembly point
- Advise the designated assembly point
- Be sure to stop or turn off if possible, all equipment before leaving and ensure all doors are closed behind you (only if safe to do so)
- DO NOT re-enter building until the all clear is given
- Follow the directions of emergency workers at all times
- Remember! – The first purpose of an evacuation is to maximise the safety of people and secondly to minimise damage to property
SEARCH PROCEDURE
The following basic essentials must be kept in mind:
- be confident
- have self-discipline display moral courage
- be trained and competent participate in team spirit
- The team must not be less than two persons
UPON DISCOVERY OF VICTIM
- Advise standby persons
- Check for danger
- Drag victim to a safe area.
- Assess victims’ condition.
- Check victim for consciousness, breathing and pulse
- Recover victim as safely and quickly as possible
- Provide first aid treatment to the casualty. Perform resuscitation/treatment if required.
- Place victim in recovery position and await medical help.
- Remain with the victim.
- Ensure the scene of the incident is preserved.
- Note all details of the incident for reporting purposes.
ENDING OPERATIONS
- Records to be kept of personnel and equipment as they enter and leave hazard control and decontamination zones
- Ensure personnel and equipment are decontaminated immediately following contamination, or possible contamination
- Once operations are complete ensure equipment is collected, decontaminated and cleaned where appropriate and serviced
- Record incident and report to the appropriate personnel for investigation
NOTIFY THE REGULATOR AND PCBU
- Fatality

DO NOT
- Do not wear loose clothing or jewellery
- Do not operate equipment near pedestrians or people
- Do not operate without the appropriate PPE as detailed
- Do not operate equipment under the influence of drugs or alcohol
- Do not enter into a confined space known to be contaminated with flammable gases or explosive atmosphere
- Do not raise or lower personnel on cranes, except in an emergency
- Do not use mobile phone while operating plant
